Greater Indianapolis Home Sales Are Off To A Great Start

February 25th, 2013 by Brian Eades

bildeHome sales jumped 22 percent in January in the Indianapolis area, continuing the brisk sales pace of 2012.

Sales of existing homes in the 13-county metro area totaled 1,642, up from 1,344 in the same month last year, the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors said today.

Not only were sales strong, but the median price of homes that were sold also rose 3.3 percent last month, to $120,000, over January of 2012.

MIBOR said nearly 15 percent fewer homes were listed for sale at month’s end compared to one year ago.

“It’s encouraging to see 2013 off to strong start. It’s clear by buyer activity and increasing prices that demand for housing is strong. Our attention now is on inventory levels and choice for buyers,” said Rick Lux, 2013 MIBOR president. “Inventory is as tight as it’s been in years and many parts of the nation are transitioning into a seller’s market. Central Indiana is still balanced well, but we’re hearing buyers say they want more choices.”

Metro-area home sales in 2012 rose 18.5 percent over 2011
